Misery is contagious. It’s slippery, it’s insidious, and it’s sneaky. You don’t even realize it’s shaded your sunshine until it’s too late. And then there you are: stuck. Stuck in a dark vortex of unhappiness, having lost all momentum to live your best life.
But, here’s the thing: Joy works exactly the same way.
You want to be happy? Surround yourself with people who bring joy. Joy, too, is contagious, and compounding. The more joy you have, the more joy you have. It’s as simple as that.
So, how do you do it? First, have an honest conversation with yourself about who is really in your corner and who is not. Those so-called friends who suck you dry? Purge them. STAT. Misery is a disease and that contagion needs to be stemmed.
Then, find people who are intrinsically motivated to be the best versions of themselves.
Find people who celebrate your success as much as their own.
Find people who take the time to appreciate kindness, to pay attention.
Find people who care more about who you are than what you have.
Find people who don’t husband their compliments.
Find people who practice generosity and gratitude.
Find people who serve others.
And, then, show the fuck up for them. Invest in them as if your life depends on it. Because it does. Make this community yours and uphold the foundation of it by doing your part every damn day. This is your “framily,” your momentum, your support system, your energy source.
And you? You are theirs.
You want to be happy? Join the framily.
