Are you “Crushing It!?!”
(Read that question with an in-your-face, temple vein pulsing instafluencer rage, preferably standing in front of a rented jet and someone else’s car.)
The largest looming threat to the prickly relationship between my advancing dotage and my tenuous hold on good health happens almost daily. It is the moment when some young whippersnapper tells me about his hopes and dreams, and I come perilously close to having a heart attack whilst going into overdrive attempting to pull a muscle rolling my eyes. If I’ve heard one dream, I’ve heard ‘em all.
And, here’s a truth bomb for you, kids: dreams do not a success story make.
You know what makes hopes and dreams turn into success? Doing.
To quote my life coach, Yoda: “Do or do not. There is no try.” In other words, get off your ass and get the hell going.
So, what if you stopped “Crushing it?!”
If you have a dream, take a step towards turning it into a reality. Do a thing. One thing. Anything. It can be a big thing, or it can be a small thing. But, for fuck’s sake: do something. Stop with the big hyperbolic talk about how you plan on (read in your best bro voice) “crushing it,” and start with making an actual plan about the most important things you need to do to move your dreams forward.
If you aren’t willing enough, aren’t ready enough, aren’t inspired enough, well maybe it’s time to admit to yourself that this dream that you’ve been harboring isn’t really of interest enough. Maybe you don’t want it anymore, or maybe it was a dream someone else handed you and you never really wanted it in the first place.
And, that’s okay too. In fact, it can be downright liberating. Admitting that you don’t want to do the work that it takes to make your dreams come true will allow you to get rid of the noise of guilt and anxiety and fatigue, and make space to figure out what actually inspires you.
But whatever you do, stop dreaming of crushing it and just get moving. Let’s go, padawan. Your dreams are waiting.
