Break Some Rules

It’s Independence Day weekend. That means freedom. And, yet, tyranny abounds. No hats, no sunglasses, no fun. It’s time to break some rules.I grew up understanding that there are hard rules and soft rules. Hard rules: don’t cross the street without looking both ways, don’t steal, don’t kill people. Soft rules: the broken cookies at the bottom of the box actually don’t have any calories or fat. But, seriously, why is it that “The Rules” are always about the don’ts and the feel bads? What about a new set of rules which actually makes us independent? Are you ready to break some rules? Here are my proposals:

  1. Love with abandon. Show up entirely and selflessly for the people and the causes that you hold dear. Wear your heart on your sleeve and let the world applaud your fashion sense. Love does truly trump hate.

  2. Be unapologetically ambitious. If having more money, access, power, knowledge, leverage allows you to show up better for those people and those causes, it’s not your ambition, it’s your responsibility.

  3. Become the person you were put on this planet to be. Stop measuring your worth by everyone else’s definitions, and taking their votes when you shouldn’t even take their voices. Figure out what success means to you — wonderfully, quirkily, uniquely YOU — and go for that with every fiber of your being.

What say you, of country ’tis of thee?
